Zones, not units
Here is the thing that trips up every new Idaho elk hunter: Idaho does not sell elk tags by unit. It sells them by zone. A zone is a bundle of GMUs, and there are about 28 of them, each with its own A tag and B tag seasons. Deer hunting in Idaho is per unit. Elk is per zone. Once that clicks, the IDFG hunt planner stops looking like a spreadsheet and starts reading like a menu. Pull up the zone map on the planner and the zones pop out: McCall, Pioneer, Selway, Middle Fork, Bannock, Big Desert, South Hills, Smoky-Bennett, Sawtooth and twenty more. Each one is its own hunt.
Pick your tag before you pick your zone
Idaho elk tags come in two flavors and they are not interchangeable. The A tag is the primitive-weapons tag: archery seasons, muzzleloader seasons and short-range weapon seasons. The B tag is the rifle tag: any-weapon seasons, the classic October elk hunt. You buy one tag, and it unlocks the zones and seasons for that tag only. Some zones cap tag numbers. Selway ran 647 A tags and 1,067 B tags for 2026. Middle Fork ran 1,551 A and 1,636 B. Most zones are unlimited for residents, but nonresidents live under a statewide quota of 12,815 elk tags, and the popular zones go first. If you are from out of state, check the nonresident tag availability page before you fall in love with a zone.
The clock right now: late season is meat season
It is Oct 21 as this goes up. The big October rifle windows are nearly done. That does not mean elk season is over. It means the season changes shape. What is left on the calendar is mostly antlerless hunts: the Pioneer Zone runs muzzleloader antlerless Nov 1 through Nov 9 in units 36A, 49 and 50, then B tag rifle antlerless Nov 10 through Nov 30. McCall runs short-range antlerless Nov 10 through Nov 30 in units 23 and 24. Bannock runs antlerless any weapon Oct 25 through Nov 15 across units 70, 71, 72, 73, 73A and 74, with a muzzleloader antlerless stretch Dec 1 through Dec 31. South Hills runs B tag any weapon Oct 25 through Nov 15 in unit 56. Smoky-Bennett runs B tag antlerless Nov 10 through Nov 24 in units 44, 45 and 52. Big Desert runs short-range antlerless all the way from Aug 1 through Dec 31 in unit 53. If you want a freezer full and do not care about antlers, late October into December is the best hunting of the year, with a fraction of the pressure.
Read the zone before you drive
Two zones can look identical on the planner and hunt completely differently. Three things decide it. First, public land percentage. A zone that is half private is a zone where you spend half your season asking permission. Turn on public land and parcels in HuntTrack and the orange private lines tell you the truth before you drive. Second, wilderness. Selway and Middle Fork are wilderness zones: huge, roadless, elk-heavy, and a serious physical commitment. Third, roads and motor vehicle restrictions. The planner marks motor-restricted areas with a small 3, and those are the places the trucks cannot follow. Add burn scars to the read: three to eight year old burns are the greenest feed in the zone, and the MTBS layer draws every perimeter back to 1984.
Six zones, six kinds of hunt
Every one of these dates comes from the IDFG hunt planner for 2026. Confirm yours before you go. Nothing here overrides the warden.
| Zone | The hunt | What is open now (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| McCall (units 23, 24) | Hometown accessible, mix of timber and ranches | Rifle windows mostly closed; antlerless short-range Nov 10 to Nov 30 |
| Pioneer (units 36A, 49, 50) | High country, late muzzleloader then rifle | A tag antlerless muzzleloader Nov 1 to Nov 9; B tag antlerless rifle Nov 10 to Nov 30 |
| Selway (units 16A, 17, 19, 20) | Wilderness, quota tags, classic October | A tag antlered Oct 1 to Oct 31 (647 tags); B tag antlered Nov 1 to Nov 11 (1,067 tags) |
| Middle Fork (unit 27) | Wilderness, brow-tined bulls | A tag brow-tined Oct 1 to Oct 31 (1,551 tags); B tag brow-tined Nov 1 to Nov 18 (1,636 tags) |
| Bannock (units 70 to 74) | Late antlerless, good access | A tag antlerless any weapon Oct 25 to Nov 15; antlerless muzzleloader Dec 1 to Dec 31 |

The nonresident math
Idaho nonresident elk tags are capped at 12,815 for the whole state, and they do not last. The quota zones go first and the popular unlimited zones go right behind them. If you are hunting Idaho from out of state, the order of operations is: buy the tag, then pick the zone, then scout. Not the other way around. The planner's tag availability page shows what is left in real time, so check it before you plan the drive.
Scout the zone like you mean it
Once the zone is picked, the map stack does the rest. Turn on hunt units and the public land and private parcel layers, because the zone line is just the start and the land inside it decides everything. Add MTBS burn perimeters for feed, NHD water for the daily elk loop, slope shading for glassing seats and the walk in, and the wind overlay for the setup. Migration corridors and collar tracks show where the herds slide when the weather turns, and late season is when that slide happens. Mark three spots where feed, water and public ground overlap, mark a backup for each, and cache the tiles before you lose signal. The zone that looked good on the planner becomes three pins you can actually walk to.
The zone picker in ten minutes
One, open the IDFG hunt planner and read the A and B tag seasons for the zones you can reach. Two, buy the tag that matches the season you want, because the tag picks the season, not the other way around. Three, read each candidate zone on public land and parcels, and skip the ones that are half private unless you have permission lined up. Four, check the wilderness and road reality: motor restrictions, distance from the trailhead, burn scars for feed. Five, stack water, corridors and wind, mark three spots and a backup each, cache the tiles. Zones and dates change, so confirm your tag, your zone and this year's dates on the planner before you load the truck.
